Charter for Connected Communities

Recently the 2002 Conference of the International Baccalaureate Schools was held in Adelaide, and the students present set down a Charter for the future of global communities and education, which will be forwarded to the 1329 International Baccalaureate Schools around the world.

Charter for Connected Communities:

We believe:

  • that all members of the community should live with consideration and in harmony with each other.
  • that everyone has the right to an equal education and the responsibility to contribute to their community.
  • that our cultural diversity should be respected and considered in our decision making at all levels.
  • that all individuals should be respected and their voices heard equally.
  • that the environment which supports our lives should be respected, valued and acted upon in our everyday lives.
  • that we should respect the customs and beliefs of all cultures.

We act to improve:

  • understanding between all community members through communication.
  • our communities by being active citizens and participating in community groups.
  • the opportunities for all young people to access education.
  • the local and global environment by considering the impact of our lifestyle and by participating in its care and restoration.
  • the acceptance of all people from all places.

We call upon:

  • all people of the world to work together to build connected communities based on acceptance and understanding and to consider the views of the youth.
  • leaders in society to promote the youth voice and opinion.
  • governments of the world to consider equal education as a priority.
  • everyone to provide a place where we can feel safe and loved.
  • students of the world to participate in friendship building so that we may forge a global community for the future.
